Struggling with writing an ISO file on Ubuntu 25.04
I recently upgraded my system from Xubuntu 20.04 to Ubuntu 25.04 and I really enjoyed the UI improvements by the teams at GNOME and Ubuntu. I setup my system and even though I switched from xfce4 to GNOME, the transition was smooth and I was able to setup everything more or less the way I wanted. I see some things that can be improved and my intention is to try to report/improve them but I'll leave those for another post. This post is about my experience trying to find a ISO file writer through the Ubuntu AppStore(App Center) and writing the ISO file.
KDE ISO Image Writer, why you like this?
Searching for "ISO writer" showed the "ISO Image Writer" from KDE. I trusted it will work so I downloaded it. Its UI is pretty simple with two fields - iso image and destination. It correctly identifies the flash drive that I inserted as default target. I navigate the other field to my ISO image and... nothing. It errors out with a message that I don't understand.
Now, what's cool about the App Center is you can select other versions of the app so if you want to download an old or nightly version of an app, you can do that. So I tried all available channels for this app but none of them worked, they all resulted in the same error.
Let me see if others got the same error: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=445036... This error has persisted since 2021?
John Kizer to the rescue:
For what it's worth, I got a very similar error in Kubuntu 23.04 - I had to umount /dev/sdb<#>, then it worked
Voila. It works.
But why is this not patched still? ~~And why is there no GNOME version of this?~~ It exists but it's a Flatpak on Flathub, therefore doesn't exist for Canonical. Why are snaps, Flatpaks and deb packages not ALL on the App Center?
